Joomla! offers hosted solution for FREE
on Joomla.com in partnership with SiteGround
New York, NY, – January 20, 2015 – Joomla, one of the most popular open source content management systems in the world, today announced the launch of its new service: Joomla.com. Users can now create and build hosted Joomla sites for free. The project is carried out in partnership with the company SiteGround, who developed the server infrastructure that will accommodate the free Joomla sites.
By providing an option to have a website hosted free of charge for an unlimited time, Joomla aims to become even more popular and substantially increase its user base. The target audience of the new service is people who seek free hosted options in the various website building solutions. The new service not only eliminates the cost of hosting a website with Joomla, but also makes it easier for the new user to get to know the system. The launch of a website by Joomla.com its done with a few clicks.
The Joomla.com service provides all the basic standard editing features of the Joomla! and has limited expansion capacity. It includes a varied set of pre-selected templates and extremely useful pre-installed extensions, such as Google Analytics, Google Maps Integration, Disqus-based comments and sharing options on social networks.
The service may not be the right solution for users who would like to create an advanced website with custom code and their own choice of models and extensions. However, sites started at Joomla.com can easily be turned into their own projects later without any limitation on extension capabilities. It all depends on the purpose of the project.
According to Sarah Watz, the main reasons for using Joomla.com instead of having a server installation are:
- Free website hosting
- Name of the free site in the Joomla.com subdomain (ex: meusite.joomla.com).
- It comes pre-installed with extensions, templates and all available languages.
- Automatic updates.

Some of the other benefits of the new free website hosting service in Joomla are:
- No ads.
- The Joomla backend is translated into more than 50 different languages, making Joomla.com a way for everyone to start having their online presence easily and for free.
- Facilities for switching to hosting in your own domain.
- Joomla is one of the most popular CMSs and has been used by millions of people around the world for almost 10 years and Joomla.com users will benefit from the knowledge of the large and welcoming global community that already exists.
The Joomla.com server infrastructure is built and will be offered by the hosting company SiteGround. The hosting partner of the project was chosen by Open Source Matters Inc. (OSM), among several candidates through a request for public proposals. Joomla.com users who at any time decide to switch to their own hosting will be free to change their website to any hosting company of their choice. However, if you choose to use a paid hosting plan shared on SiteGround, much of the amount paid for hosting will be reversed as a contribution to the Joomla project.
“We are very proud to be Joomla’s partner in this project. It has been a great way for us to contribute to the community with the best we have: our experience in hosting websites,” says Lilyana Yakimova, SiteGround Marketing Manager.
Joomla is one of the most popular software in the world, used to build, organize, manage and publish content for websites, blogs, intranets and mobile applications. With more than 3 percent of the web using Joomla and a market share of more than 9 percent, the app boosts the web presence of hundreds of thousands of small businesses, governments, nonprofits and large global organizations like Citibank, eBay, General Electric, Harvard University, Ikea, McDonald’s and Sony. The award-winning CMS is led by an international community of collaborators, who help from the novice user to the experienced web developer to make their digital ideas a reality. The power and extensibility of Joomla has resulted in software that has been downloaded more than 60 million times.
